This portrait features Genie and Alana, who live in Kreuzberg. Here is their story, as narrated by Alana.
Genie; an unusual little dog. She was tiny and she was afraid. The little puppy I had my eye on and the last one left. I was surprised because with that cute white nose she was the stand out dog of the litter, but quickly I realised the reason why… Little Genie was scared of everything.
The day I brought her home I thought she hated me. She wouldn’t look at me. But soon as hours and days passed by baby Gene grew more confident, started to trust us and soon would be running like crazy around the house and around the Kiez, barking as loud as possible.
Me and my ex boyfriend got her when we were still together. Since we broke up we have remained great friends and Genie spends her time between our two apartments. I hope she knows that she is very lucky having two nice homes in two amazing parts of the city. She comes everywhere with me, she often doesn’t trust people right away but otherwise has such a good nature and never causes any stress. She stays with me in the studio when I am working and she loves going to exhibitions and on nights out with all of her other favourite humans. Even on the worst of days she can make me smile, whether she is howling at ambulances or standing up on her hind legs to get a better view of across the street.
The funniest thing about Genie is her absolute hatred for anything that looks real but isn’t, for example she barks like crazy at statues, mannequins, garden gnomes and cardboard cut outs. I’ve only had Genie for a year but I could not imagine my life without her little face. She’s still so young and Im looking forward to seeing her personality develop over time and witnessing all the other odd things she will get up to.
